Outlook 2012

Now with 2011 left behind it's time to look at the projects I'm going to work on in 2012. I'm planning to dedicate some more time to modeling and hopefully this will result in some more output this year. The last years it was always a bit problematic to find the time for modeling due to other important obligations I have like family, work and other hobby's.

The first new project for this year is together with Fernando Ruiz. I will be sculpting an he will take care of the paintwork. When the project is finished we will publish the pictures, before that no progress pictures will be shown. I'm really looking forward to get the project going.

Another small project that I started during Christmas is sculpting a face. Until now I never sculpted a face myself and when I found the manual from Alan Ball I thought it would be a good exercise.

The carved the basic shape and now I have to sculpt the eyes, redo the mouth and refine some places.

I don't know if I'm ever going to use this face for a figure but still it's a good exercise.

I also started another sculpting project recently which will be a fantasy subject, but for the moment this doesn't have a high priority. And then there are the projects I already started. This year I planning to finish sculpting and painting Joseph Steck. Hopefully get some more work done on the crusader vignette and finish some painting projects including the 1/72 projects. Next to this I'm planning to visit some shows the first will be Ransart this weekend. I hope to see you there.

Pinocho

The next figure I started painting is 'Pinocho' from Tale of War. It consist of two figures and one of the figures was primed already for almost a year but I never could find the time to make a start with the paintwork. Now in between sculpting I decided to paint this small fellow to keep my brushes wet. The figure is about 2.5 to 3 cm high. The belly is practically finished. I used goldbrown as a base color highlighted with white and shaded with brown. Next I started the green part on the left side using different tones of green. But there is still a lot of work to do here.

Continuing with ADC Joseph Steck

Now that I finished my last figure von Zieten. I decided to continue with this figure, which was standing already for a longtime on my desk. There were several things I was not satisfied about. So I decided to change as much as possible without destroying half of the figure. His left leg was located too far to the outside so I cut it and replaced it a few millimeters inwards. Also the folds on both arms were redone and look more natural now for my feeling. The last things that were corrected are the legs. Here some more volume was added and the height of one of the boots was adjusted. Some more refining still has to be done and I have to sculpt the rest of the details. Here the pictures.

Joachim von Zieten finished

This figure I finished some weeks ago. Just in time to enter in de contest of Soldat de Plom. But ever since I didn't took the time to shoot the final pictures and place them on my blog.

One of the reasons was that I still wanted to make some corrections to the paintwork that was bothering me. Now that most corrections are done I shot yesterday evening some pictures of the figure. I'm still planning to add a few details in the future but in the coming weeks I first want to focus on some of my sculpting projects.

All the paintwork was done as always in acrylics, mainly Vallejo Model Color. And the horse was painted using an airbrush. As this was the first time I used an airbrush this was quite a challenge. Well here are the pictures of the figure.

Soldat de Plom 2011

From 21 until 23 October the 16th edition of Soldat de Plom was held again in Girona. Also this year I was present at the show which is always visited by many Spanish and French modelers.

Me and the family arrived on Thursday morning in Girona after a night with almost no sleep. My figure still wasn't finished so I was painting until the last hour. On Friday evening the work was done and I brought my figures to the location of the show. I was directly welcomed by Fernando, Joan and Ignasi and was also introduced to Josep from el baluard and a great sculptor Diego Fernando Fortes. My first painted figure was from Art-Girona and was sculpted by him.

On Saturday and Sunday I visited several of the workshops and had a the opportunity to meet and chat with great people and artists Massimo, Pepa, Carles and Ramon. It was also great to meet Andrea Iotti again, who showed me the principles of sculpting. He also was so kindly to introduce me to Massimo Pasquali. On Sunday I was lucky to have a coffee with Fernando and the winning couple of Euromilitaire Gustavo Gil and Antonio Zapatero.

On the displays there were many high quality and stunning figures from master sculptors and painters from mainly Spain and France but also from Italy. The Best of Show Historic was won of course by the couple Gil and Zapatero. Well I had a great time and it was a great organized show. And it was a pleasure to meet and speak to so many great people.

Painting day and night

Last two weeks I have spent a lot of time painting, hoping to get the figure finished before Soldat de Plom. There are only a few days left so I hope I can make it. Unfortunately painting process it's not going so smooth. The paint on the horse was not attaching very well and I had to strip the horse and start all over again. The figure is progressing well now. The upper body is almost finished. Still some work to do on the pelisse and then I'll move on to the legs. And the last part will be finishing the horse.

The face almost done

Now the face is almost done. I only have to paint a few corrections and finish painting the facial hair. The pupils are now a bit bigger which looks better in my opinion. The colpack is also finished. Furthermore I made a start painting the pelisse but it's not the coloretone I'm looking for so still some work to do here.
Next days I will work on the pelisse and jacket.

Starting with the paintwork

The last days I have made a start with the paintwork. First I tried to paint without using a primer. But this was a disaster. So after cleaning and priming the figure I started as usual with the face. After some layers of the base color Brownsand. I painted the highlights and shadows using basic skin tone and burnt cadmium red. Afterwards the highlights and shadows were blended using very diluted paint. Most of the blend work is done on the right side of the face. I'm still working on the left side. When the blend work is finished I will continue painting the hair and moustache. The hat is painted using a base english uniform which was highlighted with a sand color and shadows with black. The red are painted with base color and some rough highlights. Soon another update.

The sculpt is finished

I had some weeks of a wel deserved vacation. After my vacation I continued working on this figure. There was not much time for modeling but I worked a few evenings until midnight to get the sculpture finished. The work that was done was adding the missing details on the jacket and sculpting the hair using a MS/Duro mix. Futhermore several parts were refined or smoothed a bit more. Next step is to clean the figure and start with the painting process.

Almost finished with sculpting

Despite my busy schedule I managed to get some progress. I cut one of the front legs and replaced it with a better copy. Furthermore the tail of the horse was fixed. I sculpted the remaining hand holding the sword and added the fur on the pelisse. Also some missing details were added and some areas were corrected. Finally the end of the sculpting phase is coming closer. Besides some corrections I still have to add the braid work on the pelisse, the fur on the sleeves, some hair and finally the reins have to be added. When this work is done I can continue with painting phase.

Some little progress

Due to the big amount of work that I had to finish for my job. There was not much time was left for sculpting the last weeks. During the few hours I worked on the figure I sculpted the horse ears, the outline of the pelisse. And made a start of adding the fur on the edges of the pelisse. The sabretache and the scabbard for the sword were carved from a styrene sheet. Small rings for the belts were attached with some glue.
Hopefully I can do some more sculpting the coming weeks.

Some corrections and progress

After a week of absence to visit my newborn cousin and nephew I continued with the figure. First I had to make some necessary corrections. The position of the riders legs ended up to far to the back. So the rider was repositioned a few millimeter more to the front. Therefore I had to re-sculpt a piece of the saddle cloth. Next I fixed the saddle cloth to the horse and re-sculpted the details with a mix of MS and Duro. I also wasn't satisfied with the left arm and after some comments on PF I decided to re-sculpt the folds of the left arm. Also a part of the hand was sculpted. Still have to sculpt the thumb. The last thing I added was the braid work on the jacket and some minor folds on the trousers.

Working on the face and details

The last week I could work on the figure again and I changed the facial expression using a mix of Magic Sculp and Duro. I've made the nose a bit longer and made some more wrinkles on the cheeks and chin. Still a bit of more work to do here by adding a moustache and a bit more cheeks. I also sculpted the colpack, next I the red bag will be added. On the saddle cloth I started adding the details. The sword was carved from a 1mm polystyrene sheet. I'm hoping to achieve a bit more progress during the coming days.

Roman Aquilifer, 1st Century AD

Workshop figure painting

During the last AMSS show in Antwerpen I had a discussion with some dutch modellers about figure modeling in the Netherlands and the lack of painting workshops here. So the interest for such a workshop was investigated under the dutch modelers and we got good response. The project went to the next fase and Sander and I started organizing the workshop which was held on Saturday 21 May in Woerden. The subject for this day was painting faces with acrylics.

I had to wake up early in the morning because I still had a 1.5 hours drive to Woerden in front of me. After arriving I had chat with the rest, unpack and finally a cup of coffee.

Starting with some coffee

The demonstration

After some coffee the workshop started with a presentation and a demonstration. For the demonstration a 54mm face of Ramses II from Art-Girona was used. A great character face sculpted by Adriano Laruccia. After a demonstration of applying the highlights and shadows, the people started working on their own face. Accompanied with some nice music. Soon a good lunch arrived with soup and sandwiches. After a satisfying meal the group continued with work on their faces.

After some hours of painting, talking, making fun and looking at each others work it was already time to finish. We ended the day with some drinks and snacks and a chat. Below you can see the pictures of the work (in progress) done during the day.

More work done on figure and horse

The last weeks I have worked on the horse and the figure. I started sculpting the tail for the horse and did some adjustments on the saddle and sculpted some reins. For the figure I sculpted the folds of the jacket around the arms and made a start with the hat. The next step is to sculpt the fur texture on top. But still a lot of work to do.

Sculpting the saddle

The last two weeks I didn't had much time to model but the last couple of days I could work on the saddle and saddle cloth. Some measuring, sculpting, fitting tests and adjustments were necessary to achieve a good fitting of the rider on the horse with the saddle cloth in between. Furthermore some details were added. Now the remaining details have to be added and finish the horse. Here are the pictures.

Painting the face

The face of this figure was already primed some time and was desperate waiting to be painted. Inspired by the stunning paintwork of Jaume Ortiz on this figure few years ago I decided to try it myself. I first started placing the rough highlights and shadows on the face and continued blending all the transitions. This is the current status of the face. I still have to paint the eyebrows, eyes and lips and do some more blending in around the mouth area.

working on the horse

After positioning the figure in the desired pose on the back of the horse I continued fixing horse head on top of the body. The horse body and head are a resin copy of an commercial figure which was done by Andrea Iotti several years ago. The transition from the body to the neck was smoothed using MS. The rear horse feet are added and re-sculpted. One of the front legs still have to be replaced and finally the ears have to be added.

Female Fantasy Crusader Finished

I finished this figure just in time for AMSS show which was held over a week ago. Were it was displayed in the fantasy category. At the end of last week I finally found some time to make the pictures. This was my first fantasy piece and it was a pleasure to paint it. For sure it will not be my last fantasy piece. Soon this figure will be released by REDEES Miniatures.

IPC AMSS 2011

Last weekend on 5 and 6th March I went to the 16th International Painting Contest organized by the AMSS in Antwerpen. It was excellent organized and it was a great show. Special guest this year was Danilo Cartacci which gave a seminar on Saturday. It was great to see the master at work. When you see him painting it looks so simple.

I was also great to have a chat with the people I normally only see on the different forums. There were around 400 high quality figures in competition. I entered four of my figures in the open and fantasy category and was lucky to win a silver medal in the open category. Best of show this year went to 'Busted' from Marijn van Gils. Which was a stunning boxed diorama about a husband who finds his wife in bed with somebody else. And it was hardly impossible to photograph, you have to see it.

It was a great event and hopefully I can be their next time again.

The basework

I started constructing the base work for the figure. The idea was some rock formations with the figure standing on top. And in the background a death tree to complete the scene. The rocks are made from some stones and magic sculp. The tree needs some adjustments and sand and grass have to be added.

Furthermore I painted the inside of the shield and finished the red skirt and purple belt. Now I'm working on the flag. The blending of the front part is practically done. The next step is to paint a pattern on the flag and finish the groundwork.

Finishing the skin part

Due to the flu I wasn't able to paint for a few weeks. But now I'm trying to get the figure finished as soon as possible. The skin part is almost finished now. I made some small corrections to the face to make it look more female. At the moment I'm working on the transitions on the surcoat and this work should be finished in the next couple of days. Also work is done on the shield, leather parts and boots but still need some more work here. Here are the pictures of the current status.

Hans Joachim von Zieten

Hans Joachim von Zieten will be one of my new projects I will be working on in 2011. He was the cavalry general from the Prussian army who served in numerous wars and battles during the reign of Frederick the Great. He was one of Frederick's most trusted generals.
It will be 54mm sculpted figure riding a horse, the painting below will be used as a reference for the figure.

I have made already a start and I used a spare head which will be modified later. The general body pose is sculpted with some wire and Magic Sculp. The next steps will be sculpting the clothing and accessories. Here are some pictures of the early stages.

Crusaders vignette 1/72

Some months ago the guys of valdemar miniatures contacted me and were so generous to send me some of their 1/72 medieval figures. It are excellent sculpted metal figures with great details and they are about 25mm high. I´ve never painted figures in this scale so one of my projects for next year will be to make a vignette with these figures. Still have to think about the setting and colors.

More progress

I have made some progress on the figure. Not as much as I had planned, but I was too busy at work these days. I'm still fine tuning the transitions on the face and added some more contrast on the hair.

Furthermore I started shadowing and highlighting the surcoat and added a dragon which still needs some more corrections. The next steps are finishing the flesh part and the surcoat. Here are the last pictures I post before Christmas.

The head almost finished

The last two weeks I was so busy finishing a report for work and buying presents for the yearly 'Sint Nicolaas' that I didn't had enough time and energy to paint a lot. But I managed to get the hair done. First I painted her blond but it didn't suit very well so I changed it to red. I did some work on the mail and did the first highlights and shadow of the surcoat. I hope to find some more time the coming weeks but Christmas is arriving rapidly. And still all the presents have to be bought.

Face almost finished

Most of the blending work on the face is done, trying to accentuate the woman's face with soft transitions . Only some corrections have to be made. I also gave her a pair of blue eyes and a pair of red lips. I painted also the base color for her hair and surcoat. After finishing the face I will continue with the hair.

The first brush strokes

Here are some pictures of the first brush strokes on the fantasy crusader. The skin part and chainmail is base coated. I added the rough highlights and shadow on the face and made a start with blening the left part of the face. For the skin I added also brown rose to the base get a different skintone. Now the fun part of blending all the transitions and correct all the mistakes will start. I hope to have some more progress soon.

Female Fantasy Crusader

This is my next figure on my work bench. It's a 75mm Female Fantasy Crusader from Reedees Miniatures.

And I'm going to paint the box-art for this figure. It will be my first fantasy piece, which gives you some more freedom in the color choices. I started already with the face and this time I chose a different skin color. Soon I will post some in progress pictures.

By the way,here are the photos of the sculpture taken from Steve's blog. The final sculpt has also a piece of surcoat.

Soldat de Plom 2010

From 21 till 24 October the 15th international show of Soldat de Plom in Girona was held. I also joined the show this year. So me and the rest of the family flew on Friday evening to Girona. On Saturday I entered my figures in the composition and directly ran into Fernando Ruiz. Who was also entering some stunning figures. In the competition were a lot of beautiful figures. On Saturday and Sunday several painting demonstrations were given by Alfonso Giraldes, Alexandre Cortina and Roman Navarro.

It was very nice to see how you can achieve with different painting styles (airbrush, oils and acrylics) a beautiful figure. On Saturday there was also a presentation of Adriano Laruccia on how an commercial figure is sculpted and produced and the box art painted (Roman). On Sunday afternoon there was the prize ceremony. There several special prizes and one was a figure painted by Fernando for the best Napoleonic figure in the General class.

Which was won by Paul Vincent. And another figure painted by Jesus Gamarra for the best figure in the General class. After the special prizes the medals for the categories General, Master painting and Master open were divided. I totally didn´t expect it, because there were so many excellent figures, but two of my figures also got a prize. One silver in master painting and a bronze in master open. So returning home with a big smile. After the ceremony I went on a photo with the two master sculptors from Italy Adriano and Andrea.

A little later the chaos started when everybody started to collect their figures. But luckily mine figures got save home again.

It was a great weekend and a great show. The last show for me this year. So back to the working table now making more figures for next year.

Celt finished

After some intensive painting weeks and the last night working until two o'clock I finished this figure.

The ground work gave me some troubles and frustration in the end because of the absence of an airbrush. But I managed more or less. The eyes of the figure were corrected another time because I wasn't satisfied with the look. The design on the shield took quiet some hours but I'm satisfied with the result. I'm happy that it's finished. I learned a lot and hope to make some improvements with my next figure. Now it's time to continue with my other projects, back to sculpting and painting.

Starting the shield

During the last two days I made a start with the most difficult and time consuming part. The Celtic pattern on the shield. As shield color a I choose for a dark green color. The highlights and shadows were added and after that I painted the yellow pattern on the shield with a yellow/brown color. The next step is defining more the pattern and correct the mistakes.

I also did some more work on the figure. I added shadows to the helmet, painted the collar and did a bit more work on the hair. Furthermore most of the blend work for the trousers is also done. Now I have to finish the skin part and continue with the sword and axe. Here some pictures of the figure.

Here another update on the Celt. After Euro I started painting again. I'm still not finished blending the upper body of the figure but to do something different I started blocking in the highlights and shadows of the trousers. Now I have to blend everything nicely together what always is the most time consuming. The highlights are done with brown yellow and the shadows with cobalt blue and black. Euro Militaire 2010

Last weekend I went to Euro Militaire. It was my first Euro and it was the 25th anniversary of the event in Folkestone. We went by car and it took us about 7 hours to arrive at calais due to heavy traffic. Which would take us 4 and a half hour on a quiet day. On Saturday we went through the tunnel to Folkestone. When we arrived in Great Brittan I had to get used to drive on the left. We dropped of the luggage in the hotel and went to the show.

I brought 5 of my models for the competition. Because of the 25th anniversary they had a record of more than 1000 entries this year. And the quality of the figures was also very high. On Sundays breakfast in the hotel I unexpectedly met two dutch people I know from Eindhoven. Also some famous people like Jesus Gamarra and Marion and Allan Ball stayed in the same hotel. After breakfast we went to the show and when I entered the competition room I discovered surprisingly that I had won some medals. One Silver and Bronze en two highly commended and one commended.

You can imagine how the rest of my day was. I also ran into several people I only know from the forums, and it was great having a chat with them. For the rest I bought some useful stuff and made pictures of the models. I couldn't photograph all the entries, there where simply too many.

The Best of show of this year went to Chris Clayton with his dragon slayer a very big but beautiful creation and a well deserved winner.

More paintwork done

The last days I managed to get some more work done on the Celt. I did some corrections to the eyes and face and did some more blending on the upper torso. Still a bit of more work to do here. I also started painting his hair and moustache but I'm not completely satisfied with the final color. For the trousers I wanted something colorful and my wife came up with this base color. The next steps are adding the highlights and shadows. For the shield a green color was decided and some Celtic symbols will appear on the front. Hopefully I can show it in the next update.

Painting the Celt

I finished sculpting the Celt and I'm now busy getting the paintwork done. As always something has to happen and also this time. The figure fell on the table and the hand with axe broke off. So I had to remodel the hand and wrist and finshed the last details. After this the figure was primed and I started painting the face. First I applied two layers of brown sand and then I started applying the highlights and shadows. The next step was blending all the layers. The same has been done for the upper body but here I still have to do a lot of blending. Here are some pictures of the current status.

The surcoat finished

Here an update on the Teutonic knights. I have finished the surcoat of the rider and added the belt for the sword. Now I´m working on the drapery of the horse. The plastilina is used as a support for the magic sculp. The next steps will be finishing the work on the horse and adding some more details.

Sculpting Celt almost done

The last two weeks I spend most of my model time on this figure. Because I wanted to get it finished. Except from sculpting a few details it practically done. I still have to sculpt the thumb on the right hand, the straps for the sword, a pigtail, and do some little corrections here and there. When finished sculpting The figure will be primed and painted. I can´t wait to pickup the brushes again.

I had to made some corrections to this figure so there isn't much progress lately. The legs of the figure ended up a few millimeter too long so it was looking a bit out of proportion compared to the upper body part. So a few millimeter from the feed were removed and the basic shape for the shoes and lower part of the legs were re sculpted. Now I can finish the folds on the trousers and remodel the shoes. I also made a start with the hand and added the shield, axe and sword to the figure.

Some more progress

Lately I can spend a bit more time on modelling. So I made some good progress with the horse rider.

I finished the upper part of the surcoat and sculpted the mail on the arms and neck. I have made a new needle for sculpting the mail because I wasn't very satisfied with the other one. Still need to have a look at the mail of the left arm. I also added the pole for the flag to his right hand, the thumb is still missing. The next steps are adding the missing part of the surcoat of the right leg and adding the details. I also started to clean the horse which also will receive a nice cloth around him.

Sculpting the surcoat

I have made some more progress on the knight. First the belt was cut out from a lead sheet and fixed around the waist. Then electrical wire was used to create a rope which is positioned a bit higher. With magic sculp the folds between the belt and the rope were created. Then a thin sheet of magic sculp was rolled out to create the part of the surcoat below the belt. The next steps are finishing the upper part and the right side of the surcoat and adding the chain mail to the arms.

Celt

Here another figure I started a while ago. I wanted to see if I could sculpt the human body and a half naked Celt warrior was a perfect subject for this. First a wire frame was created and then the body was build up using Magic Sculp. The pose I took from an Osprey issue but isn't very original because most available figures have a raised hand. But instead of the usual sword I'm going for a axe in his raised hand and a shield in the other. A spare head was used with some adjustments. The upper body is more or less finished, the trousers still need a lot of work.

Working on the horseman

I continued to work on the knight on the horse. First I sculpted a basic saddle and afterwards I started sculpting the chain mail with a mixture of Duro and Magic Sculp. Impressing the C shape into putty with a needle is time consuming but worth the effort. This is my second try the first one was too bulky. After that I sculpted the knee caps and the protection cloth under the surcoat. Next steps will be completing the saddle and working on the surcoat and belts. Still a lot of work to do.

Choosing the groundwork

The last weeks I had so much other things to do and very little time to spend on modeling but I managed to get some progress. After trying out different scenery's I found this groundwork from Pegaso fitting the best with the figure. The nose of the figure was damaged due to a fall from the table. First I wanted to change the head for another one but then I decided to see if I could fix the nose. Next I added the hat and started sculpting the right hand. And I did some work on the lower part of the boots. Now I'm busy making a sword. Furthermore I have to add some more details and buttons and refine some parts. Here are the photo's.

Working on the second figure

The last days I worked on the anatomy of the second figure in the scene. He will be holding a flag in his right hand and holding the reins with his left hand. I tried to give him a bit a surpised body language. Still have to do a bit of refining. Afterwards I will start with the clothes and chainmail. Still a lot of work to do.

Joachim Murat 1767-1815

Here is the next figure I cleaned the last week.
It's Joachim Murat, or Gioacchino Murat in Italian. The best commander of Napoleons cavalry. In 1808 he became king of Naples. He was head of the staff during the Russia campaign in 1813 and joined the side of Napoleon during the hundred days campaign. After the fall of Napoleon he escaped to Corsica and tried from there to win back his kingdom but he was captured when he landed in Calabria. On 13 October 1815 he was eventually executed by firing squad at the Castello di Pizzo.

The figure is from the 54mm range and produced by Romeo Models. A beautiful posed figure sculpted by the talented hands of Maurizio Bruno. The casting of the figure is very good with great details and minimal mold lines to remove. Also it has a perfect dry fit, so no or minimal filling is required when gluing the figure together and this saves already some work and frustration. Here some pictures of the figure before priming.

Adding the details

Now with the Templar finished I can dedicate some time to sculpting again. This is one of the figures I working on for the last weekend. I sculpted the eagle on the cartridge box. The endings on the turnbacks, added some buttons and did a bit of work on the boots. I also finished the right hand were I added the thumb and did some adjustments. After a long search I found a suitable basework for the figure, which I will show in the next update. Here are the pictures.

Templar Knight Finished

Yesterday I painted the last details on the figure. I finished the surcoat, axe and spear and did some weathering of the figure. Also some blood stains were added. I still see several points for improvement but I will leave it like this for the moment. I changed my photo setup, and the initial photo's were a bit too light so I had to decreased the brightness. Hopefully with a bit of more practice and adjustmens I will be able to make better pictures in the future. Here than the photo of the figure.

Almost finished

I'm very busy lately but I could find a bit of time to continue painting this figure. I added the red cross on the chest of the figure. And the front side is now finished, I only have to add some weathering on the surcoat and chain mail. The surcoat on the backside still needs a bit more work. The shield is added to the back of the figure and painted in a slightly different white mixture with a black stripe on top to preventing a monotone look. I was working on the white part when my oldest pulled me away from my painting stuff to play with his trains. So the last things I have to do before finishing this figure is adding some more slash marks and weather the shield. Finish the gloves, spear and axe and the ground work on the sides were the paint is gone now because of touching the base.

Templar Knight update

I painted some more parts of this figure and I will try to get it finished first now. Afterwards I will continue the work on several sculpts that are on my workbench. Doing both at the same time doesn't work for me at the moment. I finished the sword and did some additional work on the belts also. For the gloves I chose a bit darker color to prevent a monotone figure, still a few things to correct. And I started with the base work adding some grass and soil. The next steps will be the metals shield and the red crosses.

Working on the surcoat

The last few days I was working on the surcoat of the figure. Adding deeper shadows and blending all the transitions. Well it doesn't show that much on the pictures. But anyway the frontside is now more or less finished the backside still needs some more blending work. Furthermore I added some shadows to the helmet and the next step is to add the highlights. The shield and sword are primed and ready to be painted also.

Renaissance Knight

The next figure I'm going to start painting this year is Pegaso's beautiful sculpted Renaissance Knight. Until now I did almost only 54mm figures. So I wanted to see what I'm going to make of this 75mm figure. I will start with the face as usual. I cleaned it and gave it two coats of primer. After drying overnight I painted a few coats of my base color Brownsand. This will be one of my side projects because I still have several other projects I want to finish first.

The sculpting continues

During the Christmas and new Year festivities I normally don't have much time for modelling. So after a vacation time, normal life started again and I continued with this figure were I ended last year. The chest was a bit too wide on the front so I started trying to correct this. I also made some changes to the left arm and re sculpted some folds. And added some small details and the left hand was sculpted but this still needs a little bit of work. Here are the pictures.

The Teutonic Knights scene

Here some pictures of the setting for the Teutonic Knight vignette. It will contain two knigths, one on a horse and one standing in front in a winter setting near lake peipus (Battle on the ice). The Teutonic Knights are defeated and trying to find their way out. These two knights ran into some enemy forces and are determined to fight their way through. For sofar the story. For the sculpting I did some adjustments on the anatomy of the figure in the front. The figure on the horse needs still a lot of work regarding to the anatomy. The horse in the scene is a Art-Girona piece sculpted by Andrea Iotti. Which will recieve the typical horse clothing used by the knights those days. Well that´s it for this year, next year this will be one of my main projects to finish.

Sculpting the left arm

Due to 'Sinterklaas', Xmas diners, visitors and other parties there was almost no time left to model. I planned to finish some models before the end of the year but I just don't have enough time for modelling at the moment. Well at least I made a bit of progress on this sculpture. I was not satisfied with the belt around his shoulder. So I removed a bit of the uniform under the belt and now it´s closer to the body. I also added some more details to the belt and had to re-sculpt some buttons that fell of. The cloths on left arm are sculpted with the epaulet on the shoulder made from duro and Magic Sculp.
Still a lot of work to do but I'm happy with the looks and the progres of the figure.

The face done!

After almost half a year I started working on this figure again. I wasn't satisfied with the face colors and changed the color mixture adding more red and I blended all the transitions. The helmet received the base metal color and now some shades have to be added. Furthermore I worked on the belts and finished the protection flap around the neck. Next step is to weather the chainmail and helmet and continue with the surcoat.

A little more progress

I was away for almost a week so not much progress has been made. I added some small details on the frontside of the figure, but the most work was done at the back adding the pockets with buttons. The decorations had come of so I had to do them also again. Futhermore I fixed the belt and bag in place. More work will follow the coming weeks.

The last days I made some progress on this figure that had to place aside for some months because I had to finish my two latest figures before the summer. Having a fresh look at the figure after several months I spotted some more flaws, and started correcting. More volume was added to the legs and chest part. Did some refining of the folds. And I added the right arm which is going to rest on a table. Then it was time to add the braid work on the trousers. I needed a very thin layer of putty and I was a bit afraid to ruin the rest under it. I had some difficulties but in the end I managed to get the braid work on the trousers. Sculpted some more braid work on the waistcoat and added a collar. When the braid work on the trousers was hard I started adding the belt, still some more work to do here. For the belt of bag I used metal foil and have to add the details later on. Hope to have some more progress very soon.

Teutonic Knights vignette

The last two weeks I'm working on some of the ongoing sculpting and painting projects. But I haven't made much progress, so it's useless to show some pictures. Especially with the sculpting I need several attempts to get something look right, so it's going very slowly. And dropping the piece on the ground doesn't help either to get some more progress. But anyhow by the absence of progress on the other projects I'm presenting a new project which is planned for next year. It will be a vignette with two Teutonic Knights one on a horse an the other standing. And probably a third figure from the opposing side. The inspiration comes from the two Pegaso 90mm knights but mine will be done in 54mm. The anatomy of the standing figure was done a while ago and it needs some refining. The next step will be adding the chainmail and clothes. It will be a challenge but hopefully I can turn it into a nice vignette. Here is the first picture with the anatomy of the standing figure.

Exposition Girona 1809-2009

After I finished the two pieces for project Girona I didn't do much modelling these weeks. I went with the family on some holidays and recovered from the lack of sleep and stress. The figures were brought to the exposition about 200th anniversary of the war against Napoleon. And now my figures are standing between the others figures of master sculptors and painters. Not all the pieces did arrive yet but I took some pictures of the ones that were there. I was very happy to see my figures standing there, although they are not the top quality as others there. But creating original figures was something I always wanted to achieve. This are my first two, still a lot to learn but it was a great experience. Time to make some more figures. Husar de San Narciso finished

And the second figure for project Girona is also finished. I resculpted the flag in one that is hanging. And also changed the type of stones of the wall. The paintjob was done in record time for me of three weeks. I still wanted to change some small changes but there was simple no time left and the two figures are on the way to the exposition. Well here are the pictures of the figure placed on the basework.

Dragoon finished

Finally the dragoon is finished. I added the sword and painted the socks and some details that were missing. I also added some dust on the boots and other parts of the figure like the elbows. The wood and stones of the basework also recieved some paint and now he is ready to go to the exposition.

Figure almost finished

The figure is almost finished now. Yesterday evening I increased the contrast on the white because I was feeling there was a not enough contrast. I also painted the boots and the rest of the laces. Now it's time to glue the figure together and mount it on its base. Add the last details and do some touch ups on the paintwork were the parts are glued together. And the last thing to paint is the flag. Not much time left so this has to go fast. Hopefully I won't break anything during mounting or damage the paintwork. Wouldn't be the first time. I keep my fingers crossed. Here are the pictures of the painted figure.

Update on the Hussar

The last two weeks I spend almost every available hour on painting the figure painting until late in the evening. When it's finished I'm going to sleep for a week. By now I finished the face and are almost done with the white jacket and brown trousers. Now I have to paint the boots the blue collar and his sword and glue the piece together. Yesterday I also spend some time in painting the base work. Still a lot of work to do but I keep my fingers crossed hopping to finish it in time.

Husar face almost done!

I primed the figure and started painting the face first as I usual do. First I added all the rough highlights and shadows and afterwards these were blended together. The colors I used for the face are brown sand, basic skin tone, burnt cad. red and some brown rose, red and black. Still some work has to be done on the ears and hair. And some little beard grown on the chin has to be added. Here are the two first pictures of the face.
After this I will work on the white shirt. This is always a difficult color to get right. But hopefully I can find some time to paint and I don't run into to many problems and show some new progress pictures soon.

Husar de San Narciso 1809

Here are the pictures of the second sculpture for Project Girona which is finally finished. It's the Husar de San Narciso 1809. For this one only a pair of legs, sword and a head was used.
The rest was sculpted from Magic Sculp and Duro.
The braid work was a lot of work with all the small details but it was fun to do. I tried out some different sculpting tools and I learned a lot from this figure which I will use for my next sculptures.

Now I have to hurry with the painting because there are only a few weeks left.
So this will be my fastest paint job ever!

The painting is almost done now only have to do the lower part of the legs with boots some detail work and the sword. After that some weathering of the boots and painting of the base work. The perfect sculpture!

On Sunday the 26Th of July our daughter was born! We are very happy and proud to finally hold her in our arms. Of Course we hadn't much sleep the last days but this will get better. Mother and daughter are doing great!
Noa weights 3200 gram and is 49 cm long, a beauty!!

As you expect I didn't had time to do modelling these days but when everything is settled down I will continue of course.

Dragoon painting update

The face and the bearskin are almost finished now, only some minor corrections are needed. Furthermore I have painted the green basecolor on the jacket and roughly the highlights and shadows. Also the red and yellow colored parts are painted. Now I'm in the process of blending the highlights and shadows, adding some small folds here and there and do the outlining. This is always time consuming but worth the effort in the end. Here are some pictures of the front and back.

Starting to paint the Dragoon

I started with the paintjob on the Dragoon and this is a picture of a very early stage. Most blending work was done on the face, this time I used besides my usual mixtures some additional filters of some red and pinkish colors. Still have to do some corrections on the skin and eyes. And I have to paint the hair, lips and ears. The rest of the colors are just basecoated with some highlights except of the bearskin. The next steps are to finish the face and adding shadows of the other colors and start blending them.

First sculpture finished

It's already a long time I didn't update my blog because a chronically lack of time. Our second child is expected very soon so everything needs to be ready.
I have finished the first sculpture. Everyday I'm discovering more and more flaws and it's far from perfect. But I'm still improving and hopefully one day create something good. For this one I used a lot of parts from different models which caused in the end some troubles in the position of the figure. The body and hat are from art-girona figures and the face is a spare from pegaso. Still have to add the sword but this will be done in the end. The figure is now primed and I started painting the face and hat.
Here is the a picture from the sculpture, it's a bit out of focus. But don't have a better one available right now.

Project Girona 1809-2009

The last weeks there isn't much progress on the figures I was already working on. This is because I'm working also on this project Girona 1809-2009. And this requires more and more modelling time.

This year is the 200th anniversary of the war against Napoleon. Therefore several events are organized this year including this project were a figure has to be sculpting and painted following one of the thirty drawings about the Napoleonic wars made by french modeller Michael Saez. More information can be found on the El Baluard website. (only in Spanish or Catalan).

I chose two figures, the first is a French Brigadier from the 24 regiment dragoons 1809. This will be mainly a conversion of an existing Art-Girona figure were some sculpting work has to be done on changing the positions of the arms and legs.

The second figure I will do is the Husar of San Narciso 1808. Here a pare of spare legs and a spare head are used were the rest of the figure will be scratch build.

Both figures are still in the constructing phase and more or less 60% finished. This is taking up a lot of the time because I'm still learning to sculpt want to produce something decent. I hope to finish them before the end of the month were after the painting process will start. I will not show any in-progress photo's. A step by step will be probably released together with the work of the other modellers in a book or on a DVD by El Baluard. So back to the workbench.

Finished the face

The progress on this figure is a bit slowed down due to the other projects I'm currently working on. But I found a bit of time and here is a little update.
I wasn't satisfied about the color of the eyes so I have redone them.
Also did a bit more blending on the cheeks and a bit toning of the hair.
And I worked on the breast plate of the figure, it still needs a bit more deep shadow. At the moment I'm painting the pattern on the jacket but I'm not very satisfied how it looks. So maybe I'm going to change it.

Update Templar Knight

I went a week on vacation and took this figure and a few bottles of paint with me. And started painting the white surecoat. This time I was aiming for a bit different color than I had done in the other figures before. For the base a mixture of white, green and brown were used. Highlights done with more off-white and shadows with more brown and black. Most of the blending is done on the front of the figure, the back still needs some additional blending. Next steps will be finishing the white surcoat, face and chainmail.

The last days I had some time to sculpt a bit more on this figure. So I lengthen the backside of the jacket a little because it was a bit on the short side. And I started adding details on the front and backside of the figure. I wanted to try out different putties so the details were done using duro and milliput. The next steps will be adding more details and adding the belts to the figure.

A little update on the Templar Knight

I have made a little progress on the knight. The left side of the face (viewer right) is blended. The right eye still needs to be corrected and I have to blend the right side. Also I did some additional work on the chain mail. I applied more shadows with black and smoke and toned down the excessive highlights.

The flag was the last part I had to paint. I spend some time to get this blue color look good.

I have made some more progress on the figure. I painted the blue color a bit darker and also changed the color of the highlights. In the front still some extra highlights have to be added. I also added more shadows on the trousers and started painting the braid work. At the back most of it is done now. Still need to correct some parts and add some additional shadows. I've made a bit more progress on the standardbearer. Painted the base colors and started highlighting ans shadowing the blue and white parts. The blue parts still needs more shadows and blending. The waist part from the white is almost done. The lower part needs more shading and blending.

Sculpture - Ultonia Regiment 1808

I have made some progress with my sculpture. Sculpted the arms and hands and also sculpted the hair with a mix of Duro and Magic Sculpt.
I'm not satisfied with the right arm and I will change it.

Standardbearer-Royal Guard Grenadeers

This is my next project on my workbench.
It's the standardbearer from the Royal Guard Grenadeers from the Kingdom of Naples, 1812.
An excellent casting with hardly andy moldlines.
The great figure is sculpted by Maurizio Bruno. With the Box-art painted by Danilo.

I started painting the face first as usual and after several hours of work it's almost done. Still have to correct some errors.
Next I will finish the bearskin.

I started figure sculpting some months ago after the WE 2008.
This is my first 54mm figure and it's scratch build with Magic Sculpt and Duro.
The subject is a soldier from the Ultonia Regiment 1808. This are some pictures of the current status.

Norman Knight, Antioch 1268

This is the last figure I finished. A 54mm figure from Elite called Norman Knight. The figure is painted with Vallejo Acrylics, the heraldry is painted free-hand. The basework is made from cork and milliput and painted with earth colors.
